Fire Rebuild Resources

First, we’re so sorry you’re going through this.

Rebuilding after a fire is overwhelming, and starting over can feel heavy and uncertain. Our team was deeply involved in shaping community rebuild practices following the Thomas Fire in Ventura City and County, and we understand both the practical and emotional challenges that come with rebuilding. We’re here to guide you through design, permitting, and construction—offering clear direction and steady support at every stage.

Do you have experience with fire rebuilds?

Yes. Our team has supported multiple families through the fire recovery and rebuilding process in Ventura County. We’re familiar with post-fire permitting pathways, rebuild exemptions, debris clearance requirements, and the coordination required to move a project forward smoothly—while keeping the human side of rebuilding front and center.

Can I rebuild what I had before the fire?

In many cases, yes. Most jurisdictions allow homeowners to rebuild “like-for-like” under expedited review processes and, in most cases, reduced fees. If you’re considering changes to your previous home’s layout, footprint, or size, we’ll help you understand what’s allowed and walk you through the options available to you.

How do I work with my insurance company during a rebuild?

It’s important to understand the basics of your policy early on. This often includes reviewing items such as dwelling replacement limits, code upgrade coverage, debris removal allowances, and temporary housing (often referred to as ALE). While we don’t act as insurance adjusters, we can support the rebuild process by providing clear scopes of work, cost estimates, and documentation that help align the design and construction with what’s covered.

Do I need to clear debris or get special permits before rebuilding?

Yes. After a fire, debris removal is typically coordinated through state- or county-managed programs, and certain environmental and safety clearances are required before rebuilding can begin. We help coordinate this process and work with local agencies, environmental health departments, and permitting authorities. Some homeowners also choose to work with private debris removal firms, which we can help navigate as well.

Can I make changes or upgrades to my new home?

Absolutely. Many homeowners use this opportunity to improve functionality, update layouts, or better align their home with current needs and lifestyle. We can also incorporate fire-hardening strategies into the design. If certain upgrades extend beyond what your policy covers, we’ll help clearly separate covered work from out-of-pocket improvements so you can make informed decisions.

Can you help me rebuild to be more fire-resistant?

Yes. We integrate fire-hardening principles into our rebuilds whenever appropriate, including:

  • Non-combustible roofing and siding
  • Ember-resistant vents
  • Multi-pane or tempered glass windows
  • Class A–rated materials and defensible landscape planning

We also help ensure compliance with Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) requirements when applicable.

Can you build an ADU while my main home is being rebuilt?

Yes—this is an option many clients find helpful. In some cases, we can design and build an ADU on your property that allows you to live on-site while your main residence is being rebuilt. This can provide stability, reduce the need for off-site temporary housing, and offer long-term flexibility once the primary home is complete.
